The Silent Syndicate: The History of the Mafia in Detroit

In his book, Motor City Mafia: A Century of Organized Crime in Detroit, Scott M. Burnstein chronicles the gangland history of the notorious Detroit underworld. Join us for a presentation which will take you inside the belly of the beast, tracking the bloodshed, exploits, and leadership of the southeast Michigan crime syndicates. Mr. Burnstein will discuss Detroit's infamous past, from its inception in the early part of the 20th century, through the years when the iconic Purple Gang ruled the city's streets during Prohibition, through the 1930s and the formation of the local Italian mafia, and the Detroit crime family's glory days in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, all the way to the downfall of the area's mob reign in the 1980s and 1990s.

Protect Yourself from Identity Theft and Scams

Learn how to protect yourself from identity theft from the Senior Brigade, a special unit of the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. The program will provide valuable information on how to reduce the risk of falling victim to the fastest growing crime in America and what to do if your identity is stolen. There will also be a presentation on phone and email scams that will review common tactics initiated over the phone or through mail/email, provide tips on how to reduce incoming phone calls and junk mail, and provide instructions on reporting a problem or scam. Light refreshments will be provided!

Did you know you can download ebooks to your Kindle for FREE through your library? If you are planning on taking your Kindle on vacation with you this summer and want to learn how to access thousands of library ebooks, this is the class for you. Our librarian will explain how to use the Overdrive downloadable book system and demonstrate, step by step, how to download books to your device. Basic computer skills required. Please bring your Kindle and valid SSLDL card to the class. You will also need to know your library card PIN number and Amazon username and password.

Check out the library’s newest service, downloadable magazines from Zinio! As an SSLDL cardholder you have access to over 100+ titles, including Rolling Stone, Newsweek, O: Oprah Magazine and much more! In this hands-on class we will show you how to set up an account so you can download and read digital magazines on your computer. Stick around after the class and our librarians will help you download the Zinio app for your iPhone, iPad, Android device, Kindle Fire or Blackberry Playbook (Zinio apps are not available for the Nook Color or Tablet). Attendees must bring their valid SSLDL library card and have an email address to participate in the class.

Henry Ford: His Life and Times

We invite you to attend a presentation on Ford’s life and work by automotive historian and member of the Henry Ford Heritage Association, Russell Dore. You will learn about Ford’s inventions, his family, some of the ways he changed the world, and both the positive and more controversial aspects of his strong personality.
